I’m Brad Lee Barnhill, Independent American Party candidate for Nevada Secretary of State. I’m not beholden to a party — I’m beholden to the voter. Here’s where I stand, and what I intend to do with the office starting January 2027.
Everything below falls within the Secretary of State’s actual authority. I’m not promising things this office can’t deliver — I’m telling you what it can, and what I’ll use it for.
Implementing Question 7 — Nevada’s voter ID law. Question 7 passed in 2024 with 73% of the vote and returns to voters this November. The real work is implementation: making sure Nevadans can actually get the ID they need, understanding what it costs and who pays, and having a clear process for what happens if a voter shows up without one. Cleaning up Nevada’s voter rolls. Using Nevada’s own public voter file, I identified over 12,000 pairs of duplicate voter registrations in Clark County alone. I asked the Secretary of State’s office to investigate. They declined. I’m now pursuing this in federal court. This isn’t about alleging fraud — it’s a flag-and-investigate approach, using cross-checks against sources like federal data, so questionable matches get reviewed by a person before anything is touched. Uniform statewide election standards. A voter in Washoe County and a voter in Clark County should get the same treatment at the polls. I’ll use the Secretary of State’s regulatory authority to require consistent standards and training across all 17 counties, rather than leaving implementation to a patchwork of local interpretation.
Transparent public audits. Nevadans deserve to see, in plain terms, that their elections are administered accurately. I’ll push for regular, public-facing audit reporting — not just internal compliance checklists nobody outside the office ever reads.
Repealing the Commerce Tax. Nevada’s Commerce Tax adds complexity and cost for businesses trying to grow here, without meaningfully diversifying the state’s revenue base. While tax policy ultimately runs through the Legislature, I’ll use this office’s voice to advocate for repeal and for a tax structure that doesn’t punish the businesses Nevada needs to diversify beyond tourism and gaming.
Protecting business owners’ privacy. Forming a business in Nevada shouldn’t mean exposing your personal information to the public unnecessarily. I’ll look at how the Secretary of State’s business filing process can better protect the privacy of the Nevadans who use it, without compromising legitimate transparency and fraud-prevention needs.
Overseeing the SilverFlume-to-ORION transition. The Secretary of State’s office is in the middle of migrating Nevada’s business registration platform from SilverFlume to a new system, ORION. This kind of IT migration is exactly where my background — twenty years as a systems analyst, twenty years as a litigation paralegal — matters most. I’ll make sure this transition is managed carefully, with real oversight, so businesses aren’t the ones absorbing the cost of a rushed rollout.
I’m not asking you to trust a party on any of this — I’m not part of one. I’m asking you to hold the office accountable for solving real problems. That’s the job, and I intend to do it.
